Riding Posture

The B17 Narrow Carved is the carved version of our classic B17 Narrow, originally launched in 1910, featuring a pressure-relieving cutout design. This saddle was designed for one-mile and half-mile races, and was the preferred choice of track racers before the 1960s. Like all Brooks leather saddles, the B17 Narrow is handcrafted in our Smethwick, UK factory using vegetable-tanned leather, which molds to your body shape and develops a beautiful aged patina over time. It is both stylish and the perfect choice for track racing, urban fixed gear, or professional riders.
Maintenance Instructions
Maintaining your saddle ensures it becomes comfortable and durable. Proofide is the only substance to be applied for leather saddle care. It is carefully formulated with special ingredients to nourish, preserve, and waterproof, helping to keep the leather soft. With regular use, the saddle will adapt to your body shape and retain its beauty, comfort, and support. A new saddle should be treated at least once to aid the "breaking-in period" and protect it from environmental elements. Never use Proofide on a wet saddle. Apply a small amount of Proofide to the leather surface, allow it to penetrate until dry, then polish thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent residue from staining clothes. Also apply it to the underside of the saddle; leaving it on the underside helps prevent moisture and dirt. It can be used multiple times during the break-in period, and then periodically thereafter, but do not overuse. After the break-in period, it's normal to adjust the tension moderately to maintain shape and comfort. When adjusting, turn the nose bolt clockwise 90° each time, checking if the tension is appropriate. You can use a specialized wrench or an Allen key for adjustment.
Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)
Which Brooks saddle is right for me?
Our leather saddles offer different shapes and styles based on bicycle type or riding posture. For example, wider saddles with springs are suitable for a 90-degree upright posture. Medium-width saddles are generally used for touring or commuting, where the rider's spine angle is approximately 45 to 60 degrees. The general rule is: the more athletic the riding posture, the narrower the saddle.
Why do I need to "break in" my leather saddle?
New leather, due to multiple tanning treatments and factory shaping, has very strong but also quite stiff fibers. "Breaking in" is the process of making the saddle leather soft and flexible. Time, use, and careful maintenance are key to bringing the saddle to its optimal state. Primarily through riding, the leather will conform to your anatomical shape and become more flexible. Over time, the natural movement of the leather will act like a hammock while riding. However, be careful not to let the leather sag too low, otherwise it will come into contact with the metal structure, causing damage, and you will feel discomfort from sitting on the rails or seatpost.
10-Year Warranty
Register your leather saddle on the Brooks official website within 3 months of the purchase date to extend the standard 2-year warranty to a total of 10 years.
Handcrafted by British Artisans
Brooks England saddles are handcrafted in the UK. The small cracks that appear in the leather during the pressing and shaping process are marks of handmade craftsmanship, making each saddle unique. The saddles also use traditional materials such as iron and copper; oxidation is a normal phenomenon, further enhancing their vintage charm.
