Naturally Timeless. Made By Hand. Shaped By You.

The Swallow is a faithful reproduction of a bicycle saddle originally patented by Brooks in 1937 at a time when Brooks Saddles were exported to the continent for professional cyclists competing in the Tour de France and other races. Today's Swallow still bears the original patent declaration “deposé” having been registered in the Paris patent office. The timeless design of the Swallow remains virtually unchanged today, and is finished with machined rivets and a chromed steel frame.

Shaped by time and use

Premium leather develops a unique patina over time, so as you cover more miles on it your saddle will change and mature. Every well-travelled Brooks leather saddle has its own tale to tell – one written by you and your adventures. Possibly with a chapter or two by the person who owned the saddle before you did. As well as this gentle beautification that takes place, the leather will also gradually mould to the unique shape of the individual. This makes for a much more comfortable ride over time, with your saddle coming to fit you like a glove. We never tire of seeing old Brooks leather saddles out in the world, aged by use but never diminished, a proud record of the miles its owner has covered.

Durable, vegetable-tanned leather

Brooks England selects the finest vegetable-tanned leather for this product. The vegetable-tanning process confers extra strength and density to the leather’s fibres, properties which are not found to such a degree when the material is tanned by other means. Leather must be strong indeed when used daily as a seat for a bicycle – it is a question of structure and support. High-quality leather also happens to be beautiful, with a lustrous finish when it’s new that is impossible to replicate by other means. Of course, as it wears, it wears with you – and the patina effect of the leather allows each saddle to tell its own story. Finally, leather is a naturally breathable material that provides a unique type of well-being. By allowing air and moisture to pass through it, the leather of your saddle keeps you cooler, fresher and more comfortable for extended periods of time.

Lasting comfort & our 10-year guarantee

These saddles have a simple purpose: to provide unrivalled comfort for as many years and as many miles as the rider needs it. This keeps each saddle true to its underlying authenticity, and can be seen in every design and refinement. Perhaps the ‘signature’ feature is the way a Brooks leather top is suspended over the saddle rail to create a moulded seat, similar to a hammock, with just enough give for tailored lasting comfort. But this is just one facet. The ingenuity that underpins a Brooks leather saddle lies in its natural comfort, yes, but also its incredible longevity. Both robust and flexible, the leather top learns the rider’s shape and movement to become a seamless connection between rider and bicycle. With leather carefully chosen, moulded and hand-finished, each is also repairable, extending an already long life. The extended 10-year guarantee we offer on leather saddles is founded on the quality and consistency of materials, and exceptional work of our craftspeople. Register your saddle with Brooks England Website to activate the guarantee.

Handcrafted since 1866

“In again submitting our Catalogue for the coming Season, we have to thank our Friends for the support we have received at their hands, and to say that we will endeavour to merit the continuance of their patronage.” These words formed the epigraph of the ‘J.B. Brooks & Co. Price List of Cycle Saddles and Accoutrements for 1888’, but it is immediately striking how relevant the message remains. Without you – our friends – and the adventures – both ambitious and quotidian – on which you take your Brooks products, we would still be nothing. And now just as then, we will endeavour to meet the expectations you have for us, and to justify your support. A Brooks leather saddle never exists in isolation. Each handcrafted seat lies on a timeline with over a century-and-a-half behind it – and many decades in front. This has been the way since 1866, and each saddle that comes out of our Smethwick factory is infused with the same heritage.

Care

Caring for your saddle will ensure it becomes comfortable and durable. Proofide is the only substance that should be used to care for leather saddles. Specially formulated with unique ingredients, it conditions, preserves, and waterproofs, helping to keep the leather soft and maintain its suppleness. With regular use, your saddle will adapt to your body and retain its beauty, comfort, and support. New saddles should be treated at least once to help with "breaking in." Treat and protect your saddle from the elements. Never apply Proofide to a wet saddle. Apply a small amount of Proofide to the finished top surface of the leather and allow it to penetrate until dry. Wipe thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent residual Proofide from staining clothing. Also, apply Proofide to the underside of the saddle. Keep this coating to protect against dirt and moisture. During the "break-in" period, Proofide can be used multiple times. Regularly thereafter. Do not overuse. After the break-in period, tensioning the saddle to maintain its shape and comfort is normal and appropriate. To tension the leather top, turn the nose bolt nut clockwise, 90° at a time, checking after each turn until the desired tension is achieved. You can use the tension wrench or an Allen key.

F.A.Q.

Which Brooks saddle is right for me?

Our leather saddles come in different shapes and styles, depending on the type of bicycle or riding position. For example, wider saddles with springs are ideal for an upright, 90-degree posture. Medium width is generally used for touring or commuting when the rider's spine is at a 45 to 60-degree angle. Generally, the more athletic the riding position, the narrower the saddle.

Why do I need to break in my leather saddle?

Due to the tanning process and the extensive handling during the shaping process in our factory, new leather is tough. This makes the fibers very strong, but also quite stiff. "Breaking in" is the process where the saddle leather becomes soft and more elastic. Time, effort, and care are key to keeping your leather saddle in optimal condition. Primarily through riding, the leather will conform to your body shape and become more flexible. Over time, the natural movement of the leather acts like a hammock while riding. But be careful to ensure the leather does not sag too low, as this can cause it to touch the metal structure and potentially lead to saddle failure, not to mention discomfort as you might be sitting on the top rails of some models or even the seatpost itself.

HANDCRAFTED BY ARTISANS IN ENGLAND

Brooks England saddles are handcrafted in England, and the leather surface may have small cracks and traces of handcrafting during the molding process, making each one unique. At the same time, the saddles use traditional materials such as iron and copper, and minor oxidation of small parts is normal, adding to the vintage style.
